The History CAPA

The Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA) was founded in September 1979 in Chilema, Malawi, during a get-together for African Anglican Archbishops who had been occasionally meeting to exchange views and ideas on the growth and direction of the Anglican Church in Africa. The Primates felt that Provinces in Africa required a co-ordinating body to effectively bring them together and foster strong relationships within the Anglican Church in Africa and the entire Anglican Communion.
A subsequent meeting in Mombasa, Kenya, outlined the following as the primary aims and objectives of CAPA:

a) Help the Anglican Churches in Africa develop beneficial relationships between themselves and the entire Anglican Communion.
b) Provide a forum for the Church in Africa to share experiences, consult and support each other.
c) Confer about common responsibilities on the African Continent.
d) Establish opportunities for collaboration and joint activities and render assistance whenever necessary.
e) Maintain and develop relationships between the Anglican Church in Africa, Partners, other Denominations, Fellowships, National and Regional Councils.

Aims and Objectives

To provide a means through which the Anglican Church in Africa can:

a) Know and link with one another as members of one Body.
b) Share experiences and consult about their ministries.
c) Establish and maintain opportunities for collaboration and joint activity.
d) Confer about challenges and responsibilities in the continent.
e) Maintain and develop mutually beneficial relationships with other churches.
