The 11th Council meeting of the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA) elected the Most Rev. Bernard Ntahoturi as its next Chair on the 7th February 2012. Archbishop Bernard succeeds the Most Rev. Ian Ernest, Archbishop of the Province of Indian Ocean who has been Chair for the past four years.
The Province had the privilege of hosting the 11th Council meeting that was held in Bujumbura from 4-8th February and brought together Archbishops (or their representatives), clergy and lay people from the 12 Anglican Provinces of Africa and the Diocese of Egypt along with partners, observers, and guests who included the Most Rev. John Chew, Primate of S.E. Asia.
The theme "Harnessing our unity to unlock our potential and secure our future" gave focus to the discussions of the Council as it sought to implement the resolutions that came out of the All African Bishops' Conference held in Entebbe, in August 2010.
The Council opened with a service of Holy Communion in Holy Trinity Cathedral, Bujumbura. Participants were welcomed to the diocese of Bujumbura by the Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Pie Ntukamazina.
A delegation had the honour of meeting with the President of Burundi, His Excellence Peter Nkurunziza.
The Province warmly congratulates Archbishop Bernard who, at the Commissioning Service for elected members requested their prayers for the challenging tasks ahead.
