Primates Meeting

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. Ecclesiastes 4:9

The Gospel calls us to a process of rethinking of our foundations and theological persuasions especially with regard to the issues in our pastoral environment. In this regard, we have deliberately created spaces for reflection as the means of deepening theological understanding and shaping strategies for engagement…..

The Primates meeting is the space provided by CAPA’s Secretariat for Primates to meet and reflect on emerging issues of pastoral concern. The Archbishop of Canterbury, His grace Justin Welby and Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop Josiah Atkins Idowu-Fearon were both in attendance during 2018’s meeting. The emerging issues discussed during 2018’s meeting include:

  1. Discipleship gaps
  2. Migration and human trafficking
  3. Climate change and its devastating effects
  4. Political instability and conflicts resulting in massive displacements
  5. Gender based violence
  6. Growing plight of young people.

These issues were recommended for consideration at the Lambeth Conference in 2020 after both His grace Justin Welby and Archbishop Josiah Atkins Idowu-Fearon gladly welcomed the contribution of the African Primates to the Lambeth Agenda. They both underscored the need for effective participation by the Primates in the affairs of the Communion, and intentional discipleship as the sure way of building a theologically grounded Church that can be faithful to her calling.
